3D Printing medicines allow layers of medication to be packaged more tightly in precise dosage. It points to a future of more personalized medicines. 3D Printing medicines may be custom- ordered (based on patient needs) so that one drug can cure patient’s problem.

Aprecia, an Ohio based pharmaceutical company, manufactured World 1st 3D Printed medicine- Spritam, which is used to control seizures brought on by epilepsy. This medicine is approved by US Federation and Drug Administration (FDA). 3D printing has already been adopted in other medical fields which includes printing new bone for custom shaped bone and in dental implants as well as in producing personalized prosthetics. This is the first time when this technology is approved for the production of drugs.

As 3D printed Spritam tablets are changing the physical structure of pill, other researchers are working on the development of new drug at the molecular level using this technology.
